Languedoc Roussillon: discover Aveyron in Hérault

I am going to talk to you about a region of France where I have already been several times and where I go almost once a year for the past 5 years: Languedoc Roussillon!  

Languedoc Roussillon: Aveyron and Hérault.

Languedoc Roussillon is made up of several departments: Aude, Gard, Hérault, Lozère, and Pyrénées-Orientales but I will only talk about the places I have been to which are Hérault and Aveyron!

 

Aveyron:

If there is one place where I had a real crush this year, it is indeed the Aveyron region. It is in this place where I visited cultural and historical sites of Larzac, visited a farm, did electric biking, and even rappelling.

I even wrote an article here during my visit to this region for Wat18.

During my visit to this region, there is one activity I would have liked to try: paragliding. When you visit the town of Millau, it is almost impossible not to see paragliders when the weather is nice, the place is so suitable for it!

If you are passionate about nature and thirsty for culture, the Aveyron region is made for you!

 

There are many parks in this region:

• Grands Causses National Park, where you can go hiking,
• Pradinas Wildlife Park, mainly featuring European-origin fauna,
• Bouscaillous Leisure Park, with quad biking, buggy rides, and paintball,
• and also the Micropolis Insect City, a place dedicated to the study of insects.
• and many more!

There are also many historic buildings to visit:

• discover the Notre Dame Cathedral of Rodez,
• The Najac Castle, Belcastel Castle, or Bournazel Castle, there are many castles to see in the region.
• The abbeys: for example, the Loc-Dieu Abbey which is fortified, or the Notre Dame de Bonneval Abbey, which is a Cistercian abbey.

As you can see, the region is very rich in natural and cultural sites.

Not far from the Aveyron region is Hérault, and there is a place that resembles Millau a lot, especially the Hérault gorges. If I had to stay there, I would go camping. Here is a well-known site for motorhome rental in Montpellier if camping interests you!

Renting a motorhome and then going to the Hérault gorges for a few days is ideal and less expensive than renting a bungalow, and you can move around several places at the same time.

Here is what you can do in the gorges of the Hérault:

• Canyoning in the Devil’s Canyon in the heart of nature.
• Mountain biking, there are many trails offered in the gorge, the trails are even marked.
• Swimming in the gorge, it is a very common activity but mandatory when the weather allows.
• Go to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert which is an old medieval town that has the feel of a small village with, by the way, an Abbey listed as a UNESCO heritage site.
• You can also admire the Clamouse cave which is an underground site about a hundred meters to discover.
• You can visit at the same time the Devil’s Bridge.

• Of course, there are many more activities, for example the visit to Lake Salagou, I have just presented the main activities.
