In this article, I am going to give you some tips for doing a road trip by car. I did several when I was in Australia.
4×4 Travel in France or Abroad
To give you some context, I did several real road trips in Australia:
- My first real road trip lasted two weeks where I traveled all over Tasmania with a Chilean, a French couple, and a German woman.
- I did another one for one and a half months from Melbourne to Adelaide with a French couple, then from Adelaide to Alice Springs with a Frenchman and two Austrians.
- I also did the west coast from Perth to Darwin in a 4×4 with two Norwegians and a German woman I met in Perth and on the road. This road trip lasted 1 month.
- The last one in Australia was to connect Darwin to Cairns and lasted one week.
- I have also done several car trips in Europe.
In this article, I am going to give you some tips that could be very useful for your road trip.
What you need to know for your road trip by car:
- Example for the west coast of Australia which is wild, there are very few towns along the way. You often have to drive 200 to 300 km to find a town. Equip yourself with an extra fuel jerrycan to avoid running out of gas. Likewise, it is better to stock up (food, water, etc.) and fill up in these towns rather than in outback stations, as gas is a bit more expensive, as is food.
- Distances are generally long, you should always take breaks or alternate driving. When I was in Australia, drivers alternated every hour and a half.
- Plan plenty of water, at least 1 liter per person per day. If you are going camping for three days with 3 people, you need at least 9 liters of water.
- Check your car. I have heard stories of people who broke down during their road trip in the Australian desert and had to leave everything inside because the car broke down.
- Choose quality equipment. For example, for our trip in Italy, we replaced our car tires because they were worn out and we had to choose Tirendo for the quality of the products from this online tire sales site. Having tires in good condition and of good quality is important for road safety. Having worn or poorly inflated tires will make you use more fuel.
- Have a GPS or a map of the places you want to go with the places where you can sleep. In Australia, we had a book with all the camping sites, gas stations, etc.
- Take your time to travel, you will enjoy your trip better and have much more time to rest.
- Never go alone on a road trip, it is often better to do it either with one person or to find people who want to do one. You can also divide expenses by the number of people.
As a traveler, taking car trips will give you a feeling of freedom to travel and will give you the impression of going on an adventure.
