Where to dive in Bali?
Hello, let me introduce myself, I am Julien, the author of the blog Underwater Diving. Tanned kindly opens the doors of his blog for me to talk to you about diving in Bali and especially the different places where it is possible to dive there.
Bali is a fairly small island as it is only 100 km from North to South, but the landscapes and underwater environments vary greatly depending on whether you dive in the South, on the East coast, or for example on Menjangan Island on the North coast. I will therefore try to give you a summary of the best spots depending on your level and what you want to see! If you want more information, I recommend reading my guide on diving in Bali.
Here are the different places to dive in Bali.
Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida : These two islands are located in the South of Bali. They host the best diving sites in Bali and are famous worldwide for the possibility of encountering the Mola Mola, also called the Ocean Sunfish. Divers from all over the world come here especially to dive with these huge fish that can weigh up to 2 tons and usually live in the depths. The best chances to see them are between August and October. Beware, these dives are not for beginners! There are often strong currents in the area, so you need to have a good level 2 certification to dive there.
There is also the well-known and very touristy Manta Point site where it is possible to dive with Manta Rays all year round! A real treat ;-).
Padang Bai : this small village located on the East coast of Bali is a good place to learn to dive. Visibility is often good and the underwater fauna is interesting. It is also possible to do beautiful night dives there. Blue Lagoon beach is one of the best places on the island for snorkeling and mask diving.
Tulamben and Amed: These 2 villages located in the Northeast of Bali are good diving destinations. In Tulamben, there is one of the most beautiful wrecks in the world, the Liberty Ship, which lies only 30 meters from the beach. It is a popular place to do your first scuba dive. This site is not to be missed!
Amed, located a few kilometers further South, is a very good place for underwater photographers. You can find rare fish species there, such as pygmy seahorses or frogfish. These dives are generally easy and suitable for beginners.
Menjangan Island: this island is located at the very North of Bali. You dive on vertiginous walls with very beautiful coral and generally the best visibility in Bali. However, you encounter few large fish there.
There are also other scuba diving spots in Bali, notably near Candidasa like Gili Selang where it is possible to encounter Hammerhead Sharks! But these sites are difficult and reserved for experienced divers.
