Food in Australia : a mix of traditional BBQ, multiculturalism (Vietnamese, Lebanese, Italian), coffee culture (Melbourne world-renowned). Unique wildlife : kangaroo (steak), crocodile, emu. Animals to know : kangaroos, koalas, wombats, snakes, jellyfish.
After 15 months in Australia, I can tell hundreds of stories about Australia but today I will talk to you about 3 particular topics that are linked to each other which are Australian food and drinks in Australia and the magnificent and deadly animals I saw !

My experience
My best culinary memory in Australia : marinated kangaroo BBQ in Kakadu, around a fire, with local Aboriginal people. Taste close to beef but drier. An experience to live once, no more, out of respect for the national symbol.
- Australian barbecues, all the beaches are full of barbecues, I can tell you it’s the Australian way of life, as soon as the weather is nice, we have a barbecue on the beach !
- Vegemite, it’s a spread made from yeast extract, yuck! But English speakers like it ! Most French people I met don’t like it !
- Tim Tam biscuits, one of my best finds, I recommend them, they are delicious chocolate-coated biscuits !
- Meat pie and sausage pie ! It’s a pie with meat or sausage inside, nothing very special but Australians are fond of it.
- Garlic bread is also appreciated by Australians but it’s not necessarily a specialty of the country.

- Expensive restaurants (starter 25 AUD)
- Dangerous wildlife (snakes, jellyfish)
- Culinary desert in the outback
- Heavily taxed alcohol
- Potable water sometimes scarce
- Tooheys, the most common and easiest beer to drink,
- XXXX, the cheapest beer you can find in Australia,
- VB (Victoria Bitter), the beer of the state of Victoria,
- James Boag, the beer of Tasmania, the inhabitants of Tasmania only drink that ! My favorite !
- Cooper, I don’t know much about it 🙁 but it’s a friend’s favorite,
- Foster, contrary to what people think, no one in Australia drinks Foster because it is a beer intended for export !
There is one item that is very popular among young people and backpackers in Australia, it is a 4-liter box of red or white wine for about ten dollars, the first time you get a headache but you quickly get used to it. My best memories of drinks and partying in Sydney were made with “GOON”, the name given to this drink ! Worth trying !

Never swim in the waters of northern Australia from November to May without a wetsuit: box jellyfish are deadly within minutes. Check with locals or beach signs.
- Spiders, Australia is known for housing the most venomous spiders in the world !
- Snakes, same for snakes, I encountered a few !
- Kangaroo, everyone has heard about them !
- Platypus, it’s a kind of duck with a big beak !
- Echidna, it’s a kind of small rodent with spines like a hedgehog !
- Koala, these animals sleep all the time !
- Emu, a kind of ostrich !
- Wombat is a kind of huge rodent, I saw some up to 1.5 meters !
- Crocodiles, one of the animals you don’t want to encounter !
