The American Continent: A Patchwork of Photos
Today, I am hosting a site with an interesting concept; I will let “Hello America” tell you about the American continent and then about its site.
From the Arctic Ocean to Cape Horn, this vast continent (no fewer than 44 countries) covers 28.2% of the emerged lands.
Also called the “New World,” this continent holds great diversity. Although Europeans only discovered it in 1492, its history is much older, and the first populations are believed to have settled there 30,000 to 50,000 years ago.
A Continent Presenting Great Variety
Can we really speak of a single America? The American continent is sometimes divided into sub-continents: North America, Central America, and South America or Latin America.
Indeed, from one country to another, the differences are significant. These nations have experienced very different development after their emancipation. There is not much to compare between the United States, a superpower of North America, and the countries of Latin America, where social disparities are very important, especially in Brazil or Chile.
Differences also concern traditions and lifestyles. The life of a New Yorker is indeed totally different from that of a Shuar, an inhabitant of the Amazon. Indeed, many Amerindian peoples still live in a very traditional way today. They practice hunting, fishing, and shamanic animism is still very present in their daily life. Their culture is based on the oral transmission of their history. America is therefore also a whole range of cultures, from the hyper-traditional life of Amazonian villages to the hyper-modern life of a North American megalopolis.
And then the history of America has also resulted in a very varied population. Indeed, there were first the Amerindians, the Aztecs, and the Incas. Then, with the different waves of colonization, Europeans arrived who, from the 16th century, deported Africans to work in plantations and mines. From this sometimes tragic history results a great diversity in the American population.
Given its geographical extent, this continent also presents a great variety of landscapes, all more magnificent than the others. Whether it is the wild landscapes of Canada, the Grand Canyon in the United States, the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, the lush nature of the Amazon, the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, the snow-capped volcanoes of the Andes, the natural wonders of the Galápagos in Ecuador, the Atacama Desert in Chile, the Iguaçu Falls in Argentina, or the vast expanses of Tierra del Fuego, all these landscapes, different from one another, are breathtaking and leave no one indifferent.
