Essential to remember
Living for free abroad : 3 main networks. WWOOFing (organic farms, 4-6h/day), Couchsurfing (free accommodation with locals), HelpX (small jobs in multiple sectors). Ideal combination for a long trip with zero budget.
I will present to you several tested and approved concepts to live abroad without spending a dime.
During my trip around the world, I tried by various means to save as much money as possible or to use as little as possible, to meet as many locals as possible, to learn the language and try to have as many different experiences as possible !
During these experiences, I tried several things at my own risk including hitchhiking, wild camping, etc., I talk a bit more about it on how to become a Australia backpacker.

Did you know ?
Combined, WWOOFing + Couchsurfing + HelpX have more than 30 million active users worldwide. That’s equivalent in size to the population of Peru. An ultra-active international network.
I will quickly introduce the concept. The goal is to work on a farm favoring fair work, an organic farm. I did it on a farm that later allowed me to find work in Australia. There are not only organic farms but it is mainly domestic work or farm work. I had the opportunity to meet other people who have done woofing; it is a very common practice in Australia!
It is mainly farm work in exchange for free accommodation and food!   ;

Travel for free: Couchsurfing
  ; I also talk about it more in depth here: couchsurfingThe principle of couchsurfing is sofa surfing, meaning that a private individual lends you a place to sleep for one or more days, and in some cases also cooks for you! It is very appreciated to bring them a little something from your country even if they don’t ask for anything! It is a very common practice worldwide! It allows you to exchange with locals, to have a local guide who shows you around the city with a smile!
You can practice it in any country and you can also host people at your place but it is not mandatory! I remember finding myself at a Couchsurfing meeting in San Francisco and in Sydney with very nice people! It’s a very nice concept and couchsurfers gather in certain cities once a month or weekly (for example in Paris, it’s once a week)! During these meetings, it can also be a way to find a couch and have a first contact with your host!
My experience
My month in Georgia in 2022, I did not spend a single lari on accommodation. 10 nights couchsurfing, 12 nights WWOOFing on a farm near Sighnaghi, 8 nights at a musician’s place I met. Pure network, pure experience.

Weaknesses
- Commitment required (work, exchange)

- No guarantee of host quality
- Variable comfort
- Couchsurfing platform paid since 2020
It is a principle similar to woofing but there are fewer hosts, everything is done online, from subscription to contact, although it is also very appreciated to call the host!
Help exchange favors exchange for free accommodation and food!
What is very nice about Help Exchange is that you get to do all sorts of activities! Thus, you can work in an animal sanctuary, work in a hotel, and go on catamaran cruises! There are many different activities but places are limited!
The classic trap to avoid
Always check the reviews and profile of your host before committing. Ask to have a 30-minute video call before 2+ weeks of stay. You could find yourself in a difficult situation without easy recourse.
