You have decided to travel by car and not take unknown people, the only advice I can give you is to be careful in certain countries like Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, etc. There are mandatory vignettes to drive in the country! Book your tickets in advance (3 months) if you are leaving for a long weekend in high season (Pentecost weekend or Ascension Thursday) because prices rise very quickly. I am leaving for the weekend of May 1 and 8 and I booked my tickets 2 months in advance but if I had booked 3 months in advance, I could have saved another 20 to 30 euros on the ticket! This amount could get you an extra night in a youth hostel!

Hitchhiking is more successful in Germany than in France. If you have a low budget! You can always try it! I remember that at the end of my world tour! I got from Frankfurt to Metz by hitchhiking by taking 3 cars! It is very practical, and you always have very good memories!
