Essential to remember
Azimo is a money transfer service to 200+ countries, faster and cheaper than Western Union or MoneyGram. Fees around 1 to 2%, compared to 5 to 10% for traditional competitors. Service acquired by Papaya in 2022 but still active.
I will give you my opinion on withdrawing money without a card in this article: Azimo review what I think about it.
I just found a tip that I want to share with you, regarding money transfer abroad or internationally.
Azimo review: fast money transfer in a few minutes
I am currently in Argentina in the city of Buenos Aires. Argentina is a country where life is good right now because you have a good exchange rate and you can have a good standard of living with your euros.
Did you know?
Azimo was founded in 2012 by 3 entrepreneurs with the goal of reducing money transfer fees to developing countries, which could reach 12% at traditional banks. Today, the service covers 80 currencies.
The currency is experiencing a very rapid devaluation and banks are struggling to keep up, follow the news for more details.
I am in Argentina for 1 month and I heard about a fast international money transfer service: Azimo review.
I have already been to Argentina once and one of the things that struck me a lot was that all banks took automatic commissions during cash withdrawals.
These cash withdrawals cost at least €5 which remains reasonable, but what was not normal at the time was that you could withdraw a maximum of 100 to 150 euros.
Before arriving this year in Buenos Aires, I tried to find a solution and a friend recommended this international money transfer service and what I can tell you is that I do not regret it.
| Service | Average fees | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Azimo | ~2% | 1-24h |
| Wise (ex-TransferWise) | ~1% | 1-48h |
| Revolut | Free (limits) | Instant |
| Western Union | 5-10% | Few minutes |
| MoneyGram | 5-8% | Few minutes |
In the end, you will have a 10 € discount on your next transfer.
Why choose Azimo for your money transfers?
To present my opinion on Azimo, it is an online money transfer system headquartered in London, England, with a website and also a digital application.
Why Azimo? Here are several advantageous points:
- It is a fast service with a simple, practical procedure, with an immediate response; the transfer can be instant or can take up to 30 minutes. Azimo does not accept check payments, only card or bank transfer payments.
- A better exchange rate in the case of Argentina, here is my experience in Argentina: the current rate in January 2020 is 1 € for 66 Argentine pesos at a bank ATM or when paying by credit card (Visa or Mastercard).
- On Azimo, you can get 80 euros in cash for 1 €, which is a rate of more than 20%. I myself used this service to withdraw 400 euros in Argentine pesos.

Azimo transfer review
Transfer made on Saturday, January 18, 2020: 32,224 pesos in cash for 390 € (400 – 10 credit from a referral), image from my smartphone.
I made this transfer on a Friday just before leaving and collected it on a Saturday, a 10 euro discount thanks to my friend’s referral offer, which is 82.5 pesos for one euro in cash.
The usual exchange rate with a withdrawal using your credit card would be 66.6 pesos if you include Argentine bank fees; the conversion is much lower.
You can withdraw a maximum of 5,000 Argentine pesos because there is a withdrawal limit at bank ATMs.
I was told that I could exchange money on the black market if I had bills in $ or EUR. With this solution, it seems safer to me and I get a better exchange rate for better financing to buy products.
I compared several places for your money exchange (like TransferWise); the exchange conversion is unbeatable!!
My experience
I used Azimo to send 500€ to the Philippines from Bangkok: the recipient received the equivalent in pesos on their GCash account in 3 hours, for 4€ in fees. With my bank, it would have cost me 30€ and taken 5 days.
- 2 free transfers or wire transfers (in January 2020), to be honest, even if I had to pay the fees (price of the bank transfer in Argentina on Azimo), I would gladly pay them, because with the automatic exchange rate, I saved more than €60.
- There are many places or spaces where you can withdraw your money depending on the destination. Thinking I would arrive just before the closing of the Argenper transfer agency counter (6 p.m.), I chose a place near the port, as I was coming from Uruguay. I couldn’t make it on time and I chose to go near my home in Villa Crespo to withdraw the money, I had no problem retrieving my money. In Buenos Aires, there are about 10 places to collect your money. You can receive an SMS for the payment if you wish.
- You can instantly track the status of your transfer via the mobile app, the services are simple and fast, you can also follow them via the website.
- You can send the amount you want, the fees will be the same, because for some agencies, bank fees vary depending on the amount sent. The good news is that there are no limits.
If you are on a Working Holiday Visa (PVT) in Argentina, I really recommend using this service instead of withdrawing money at a bank because you would have to pay bank fees even if you don’t have fees on your bank card, as these are the fees charged by the Argentine bank during your PVT.
From my experience, Argentina is one of the only countries that applies bank fees.
I personally have an N26 bank card (an online mobile bank similar to Revolut) and I don’t pay fees with N26 but Argentine banks apply fees.
If you don’t know or want more information about mobile banks, it’s here.
Just read to the end, you will get a promo code for €10.
In what cases would you use Azimo? How does this service work, my advice?
- Azimo’s services operate in 195 countries and at many transfer points worldwide such as Colombia, Uruguay, the Philippines, India, Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan, Brazil, and Russia.
- Azimo offers transfers outside the SEPA zone, because when you are French or French-speaking, as soon as you make a transfer in foreign currency, fees apply. With Azimo, these fees are reduced and much lower than any transfer site or banks.
- You can also ask your family or a friend to make a transfer from France, they can benefit from 2 free transfers if you lose your wallet or bank cards or do it yourself by making a payment in the form of a transfer.
- When you have to advance money and do not accept dollars, which is the case for a trip to Egypt for example.
- You can pay a foreign client or make a payment to a foreign provider in their local currency, which can make operations simpler and faster.
- If you need cash quickly and don’t have a card with you, you can make a transfer from your mobile and directly collect your money at a partner cashier just with the reference number.
How to retrieve your money without a card, withdraw money without a card or pay your recipient?
Previously, you chose the destination point of an agency in my case from France to Argentina in Buenos Aires then transferred the money or performed a sending operation like on Transferwise or a bank transfer.
You will receive a code to remember for the checkout.
You just need to have the transaction reference code proving the sending so they can find the transaction (no passbook or transaction documents) and an identity document such as a passport.
Advantages
- Low fees (1-2%)
- Fast transfer (often same day)
- Clear mobile app
- Many supported currencies
- Possible cash receipt, bank or mobile wallet
Weak points
- Not available in all countries at departure
- Monthly transfer limit
- Identity verification sometimes slow
- Service acquired in 2022 (uneven service quality)
Without an identity document, you cannot validate the operation and the payment procedure.
In my case, this corresponds in the screenshots above to the cash withdrawal reference at partner agencies in the chosen country.
The good news is that you have 2 free or no-fee transfers and you can benefit from 10 euros of credit or free voucher to transfer, by clicking on the image: join the many customers at Azimo worldwide!!
Opinion on Transferwise or my Azimo review: the answer here
It really depends on the currency you want to exchange to; the exchange rate is sometimes more advantageous with Transferwise or more advantageous with Azimo.
Azimo is much more advantageous in Morocco, Argentina, Senegal for example, and many other countries.
The classic trap to avoid
Check the applied exchange rate before confirming, not just the fees. Some services show “0 € fees” but mark 2% on the exchange rate: it is ultimately more expensive than a service with visible fees.

You can see 62,750 CFA francs with Transferwise versus 65,600 CFA francs with Azimo, about +/- 5% difference in Senegal or 3,000 in banknotes, which is not negligible on larger amounts, Azimo is better in this case.
You can use the simulator and get the answer quickly and automatically.
Azimo offers transfers to Tunisia while Transferwise does not offer payment space there, for example.
What others think of Azimo, the smartphone app rating and newspapers (including a finance one), Azimo reviews and viewpoint:
The offer is really impeccable, practical and with the above link, you can test and subscribe to the service with 10 euros off, so what more could you ask for, I am sure you will be one of their next customers.
Note to all: I talk in my article about Argentina because it is in this country that I used this service, but you can use it in most countries around the world where you travel.
Along the same lines, the article on withdrawal fees provides useful insight. Our feedback on hiding your money also offers good tips, and the guide dedicated to earning money with nicely completes the picture.
The advantage here is that there is an incredible exchange rate and you do not have to pay withdrawal fees, and you will receive the money in cash by going to a partner counter or ATM.
