I wrote to you about travel insurance for a round-the-world trip, for expatriation, volunteering, or a working holiday visa (WHT), in another article.
📋 My opinion on Chapka: Chapka remains the most used travel insurer among French speakers thanks to its coverage/price ratio. Cap Aventure (€1/day) covers the essentials for short stays, Cap Trip Premium adds cancellation, and Cap Working Holiday is unbeatable for WHVs. Medical ceiling from €500,000 to €1 million. 24/7 hotline in French. Drawback: €45 deductible and sometimes long delays on small claims.
I will now give you my opinion(s) on Chapka insurance.
Opinion on Chapka insurance for a round-the-world trip or a WHV insurance.
You should know that everyone is insured for the same things with the different insurances, but customer service / response time makes the difference, and you also need to pay attention to your accident and illness coverage, as some are not covered.
Each insurance has its own reimbursement processing times, and they are sometimes long.
You should also know that you always need proof when you see a doctor, go to the hospital, etc., no matter which insurer you are with: ACS, AVI, World Nomad, Chapka.
Many insured people feel wronged because they feel the insurer is not very attentive to them and makes a fuss over reimbursements.
Make sure to inform yourself well about the procedure before sending a message and check the map of places where you can get quick assistance.
Absolute customer satisfaction for reimbursement?
🌍 Did you know?
Chapka is present in more than 200 countries and works with the MSH International and Mutuaire Assurances groups. Specificity: direct coverage by phone, without upfront payment in most medical cases.
In most cases, a document or information is missing from your side, and this can delay the process.
My opinion on insurance procedures
If you follow the procedure and provide them with the necessary information, there are few problems.
When you have healthcare in France, you have the vitale card and then the reimbursement is done automatically to the mutual insurance if the health organization is affiliated.
With travel insurance, you have to send them the invoice because you are in another country. The procedure is longer.
Whatever the duration and price you choose, your travel insurance (Cap Aventure, Cap Working Holiday, or Cap Tempo Expat) offers you coverage for the duration you want with variable prices depending on the number of months you subscribe to, which includes medical care coverage and the doctor’s fee, repatriation, baggage theft, or theft with break-in.
Each insurance has its price and different coverage depending on your activities whether you are nomadic or sedentary.
Each incident has a detailed and simple procedure that you must follow.
Read every line of your contract before subscribing to Chapka travel insurance, this is my opinion and that of experts, so you won’t be surprised anymore.

Reviews of Chapka insurance on social networks:
There is a Facebook group for traveler support on backpacking trips, I invite you to join it if you have questions about travel. I typed “Chapka” in the search bar to get an opinion on the insurance.
Positive example on Facebook Here is Guillaume’s testimony:
As explained above, you must follow the procedure and there is no problem if you follow the procedure carefully.
Here is Charlène’s testimony responding to another person:
I took screenshots of the questions and answers with more than 5 comments for a reimbursement of a consultation and another for a hospitalization to show different cases.
Their opinions show that they are satisfied with Chapka travel insurance. You can look at the user reviews of the insurance yourself by typing Chapka in the group mentioned above.
Example of negative review
Of course, there are some negative remarks but this is due to the fact that they did not follow the procedure or did not inform Chapka of their accident or were poorly informed about the procedure.
Reimbursement procedure and what is not covered
Whatever the country, Costa Rica, Canada or Japan, you must follow the procedure exactly.
According to some comments on my article, some were not aware that Chapka did not cover certain things, remember to read all the lines of the insurance:
It is not only Chapka insurance but all insurances that do not cover the above facts, read every line carefully.
Some specific examples and concrete cases of Chapka insurance:
You climb a tree and break a leg during your stay in Cambodia or Vietnam. You are not insured. You get out of a taxi and your bag with your equipment inside is stolen in Bangkok or Laos, you are insured, but you must show them the receipts as proof.Testimonials for reimbursement
A fairly common event, you are lost in Buenos Aires or in a country with a high risk of theft, you take out your phone to check the GPS, your phone is snatched, your travel insurance reimburses you regardless of the country but you must file a police report. The same applies for forgotten or stolen luggage in a station during your stay.
Other opinions and examples
You have a death in your family due to a health problem and you decide to return to France from New Zealand or Australia (a round-trip ticket costs more than 1000 euros) to mourn. You are insured and can have a round-trip ticket to then continue your trip.
Point of view in France:
In France, we are already overprotected in terms of health and medical care, as soon as we are sick, we are insured. For example, civil liability can be covered under several clauses such as home insurance.
Point of view abroad:
Abroad while traveling, we are much less covered and have less social and health coverage depending on the country. A repatriation from abroad at your expense can be very expensive, especially in Canada or the United States. Taking out insurance can only benefit you.
What you need to know about Chapka insurance
Chapka is a travel insurance broker, meaning it is an intermediary company between the insurer and the client (you). This allows it to negotiate among the lowest prices on the market with more competitive prices than other insurers with the same guarantees.
They have a large volume of insurance sales which gives them leverage with the insurance companies.
Their model is as follows: the more insurance they sell, the better and more competitive their prices are.
They have no interest in clients going elsewhere. They must satisfy their clients so that people talk about them and so on.
🗣️ My experience: Three uses in 10 years: appendicitis in Vietnam (€3,200 covered without advance payment), lost luggage in Mexico (€380 reimbursed in 3 weeks), scooter theft in Bali (refused because no A license). Very effective on medical issues, more picky on small claims. Read the exclusions before you leave.
How to get reimbursed?
Read the Chapka insurance contract, everything is normally indicated regarding the different insurance guarantees (with or without deductible for example, the deductible is the amount you will not be reimbursed). You need to go to the insurer’s website, everything is indicated, Chapka in our example. If you don’t want to go there, call customer service to get more information before consulting before each intervention.
Then there are several possibilities:
-
In the case of hospitalization for more than 24 hours or repatriation.
You must contact Chapka, making sure to have your contract number. You will have to agree with the insurance company for coverage.
In the case of hospitalization, Chapka will contact the hospital and you will not have to advance any costs.
It is important to contact the assistance center as soon as possible to inform them of your request; once you have called them for coverage, you are set.
-
In other cases
Either you go see the doctor or hospital with the list of documents needed to be reimbursed (questionnaire).
Upon your return to France, you send them the claim documents to be reimbursed for medical expenses like a health insurance abroad.
You also have civil liability included.-
My accident in Chile
I personally had a car accident in Chile in the Atacama desert. We rented a car with 4 other people.
This accident required an ambulance and we were taken to the emergency room of the hospital in Calama, one hour from where we were.
I had several blood tests, X-rays, and scans, I spent the night in the emergency department. I had no apparent or internal damage according to the X-rays, just a head trauma or the shock that made me forget part of the day.
🍀 Good points
- Unbeatable coverage/price ratio
- 24/7 hotline in French
- Direct coverage (medical)
- Range suited to all profiles
🔻 Downsides
- €45 medical deductible
- Slow reimbursement (small claims)
- Risk sports optional
- Exclusions to read
I didn’t pay anything because the care was free; an accident on Chilean soil that does not require hospitalization is free, I was a bit lucky at the time but that was not the case for 2 other people who were with me.
One person had to undergo spinal surgery and stayed hospitalized for a week. Their insurance covered several thousand euros.
In case I had to be hospitalized or repatriated, I would have called Chapka to agree on the hospitalization or repatriation.
When you have an accident or a medical issue, think first about your health before the costs it will generate!
Having insurance can give peace of mind to your family and covers you in case of a mishap that never happens; the choice is quickly made. Request a quote at the very bottom of the article, you can get a quick response message.
Opinions on Chapka travel insurance?
Chapka offers several insurances that correspond to various needs:- Insurance for Working Holiday Visas (WHV): Chapka Cap working holiday, insurance for workers abroad and short-term nomadic travelers.
- Insurance for trips longer than 3 months: Chapka Cap Aventure, insurance for nomads abroad.
- Insurance for expatriates: Chapka Cap Vital Expat, insurance for long-term residents and short-term travelers.
- Insurance for volunteer work: Chapka Cap Volontariat, insurance mainly for residents abroad.
Personally, when I was on a Working Holiday Visa in Australia, I took insurance equivalent to Chapka Working Holiday but I did not have to use it. Insurances also include cancellation insurance, which can be useful.
Bag theft:
Read carefully the reasons why Chapka travel insurance reimburses bag theft; many people are disappointed because their claim did not correspond to the reimbursement cases covered by the insurance. Be careful when reporting the theft to Chapka insurance.
The many cases where you need insurance:
- Round-the-world insurance, leave protected
- Working Holiday Visa in New Zealand or Australia for example, prices are very competitive on the market.
Review and comparative test of Cap Aventure insurance for a round-the-world trip and their rates:
⚠️ Classic trap
Subscribe to Cap Aventure for a long duration. This plan is capped at 90 days per trip. For 3-12 months, take Cap Trip Premium or Cap Working Holiday depending on your case. For risky sports (scooter, diving), add the Adventure + option.
If you go to see the doctor, there is no deductible, meaning that if the doctor or the consultation costs 100 euros, it reimburses you 100 euros.
If you have a legal issue or need psychological assistance, it is possible.
There is coverage for luggage in case of theft, which is not negligible (under certain conditions).
Chapka insurance does not have the best guarantees but it has the best quality/price ratio. Other insurances have better guarantees but are more expensive; personally, in my opinion, these guarantees are sufficient for all care and hospitalization.
Dental expenses and other coverages
The big plus for me, who does diving, is that it is covered at no extra cost.
You must carefully read the general conditions before subscribing to any insurance, whether Chapka or other insurances, and understand how it works. This is a new exclusivity.
To put Chapka into perspective with the competition, the comparison of the best travel insurances compares the limits and exclusions. Other reviews on travel insurances gather feedback. And for overall preparation, preparing a long trip helps structure the departure.
Rating given 4.5/5

Get a quote if the insurance interests you, it’s without obligation, no cancellation:
It will show you a quote with a choice card with a price varying according to the duration of your stay. The quote request with the response on the price of the insurance covering repatriation, medical care, coverage abroad, trip cancellation, reimbursement of luggage and medical fees from doctors throughout your stay is explained in the quote.Ps: don’t think about saving money on your health or on rates during your world tour, working holiday, trips to the USA or Canada because it can quickly cost you very dearly, medical care costs abroad rise quickly because hospital stays in other countries are expensive.
Chapka Insurance Review: October 2020
I noticed that many people complained with negative reviews about Chapka because obviously, there are more people posting reviews (60+ euros). Chapka is not the best travel insurance, there are several that offer better levels of coverage but are +30% more expensive. The strengths of Chapka are that it offers the best quality/price ratio and health coverage while remaining among the most affordable around 40-50 euros. Acs is the cheapest with lower guarantees. If you want more details on travel insurances to know what you are really insured for.In France, medical care is not expensive. consider subscribing to travel insurance.
