Quality of a traveler

11 October 2013

In a previous article, I talked to you about how to make your travel dreams come true. In the logical continuation, I will talk to you about the mindset of the traveler who is still searching or who is already prepared to leave.

From Will to Achievement

Who has never been afraid to travel alone for a long time or to travel in backpacker mode?

I will list the most common reasons that block you:

  • I am alone, I am afraid. As a result, I postpone the departure to a distant land or I go to a more comfortable or easily accessible place.
  • I have no money, I don’t leave because it costs too much.
  • I prefer organized things, I stay in the same place for the entire duration of the trip.
  • I fear for my safety so I prefer to go in a group.
  • I don’t have time, my schedule is busy, that’s why I don’t go far.

I have already experienced each of these problems at least once but I found a solution each time. How? Two words: “Preparation” or “Information” and “Practice.”

I am convinced that for preparing a trip, there are two types of preparation:

  • Material preparation (Money, Equipment, etc.)
  • Mental preparation.

While material preparation is easy to orchestrate and controllable, mental preparation is another matter.

For practice, the more you do something dozens and hundreds of times, the more you get used to it. These problems can then turn into assets.

Preparing Mentally or Psychologically

Mental preparation is worked on in the long term. It is unique to each person’s experience. The qualities required to prepare mentally for a trip are:

  • Adaptability, open-mindedness, initiative-taking, and organization.

These are everyday qualities but when you are abroad, it’s no longer the same, you panic because you lose the balance of everyday life.

Don’t dream, if you are not able to talk to foreigners in France, you won’t be able to do it abroad. If you have money problems in France, it will be worse abroad.

How to Solve This? Concretely, You Have to Make Discomfort Comfortable.

Here are some leads and advice:

  • Adaptation: Do new activities, learn a new language, meet new people, give yourself restrictions and respect them, etc.

The idea is to do new things.

  • Open-mindedness: Do what you don’t like, try to understand people from different cultures. Talk to different people, etc.

The goal is to understand different points of view.

  • Initiative-taking: Speak first, choose for the group, assert yourself if necessary, make proposals, etc.

The aim is to know what you want to do and to accomplish it.

  • Organization: Try to tidy up logically, follow an established order that you have set for yourself, write down what you want to do, etc.

The ideal is to achieve the goals you set yourself each day.

If you develop each of these qualities you will be more able to travel more freely and easily. Each culture and each country thinks differently and it is not up to them to adapt to you but up to you to adapt.

Travel is a continuous and constant learning process.

Now you know how to travel and you are prepared for the unknown. You can almost take flight!

And you? Do you think what blocks you is more mental or physical?
