– Language Teacher,
Being a teacher abroad is quite a learning experience; it’s a job combining meeting locals and minimal working hours (most teachers have about 15 hours per week on average and earn better salaries than their local counterparts, which allows them to travel during school holidays). You can find many opportunities in Southeast Asia or Central Asia and in South America.
– Volunteer in a Humanitarian Mission,
Although unpaid, some NGOs do offer compensation; volunteering allows total immersion with the locals, you will most of the time be with locals and sometimes other volunteers, which helps you learn the language (I recommend Latin American countries for Spanish). You can find a mission in every region of the globe!
– Au Pair,
A job more suited to developed countries, it is very popular among families of former immigrants who want their children to speak their ancestors’ language or wealthy families who don’t have the time. I had a friend in Sydney who often went away for a weekend or a week with the family to beautiful places for hikes or to the family’s house.
– Artist (Singer) playing a musical instrument,
This job requires some talent. I once met in Thailand a singer-musician who has been traveling this way for over 10 years. He goes from country to country and plays in bars that pay him for his performances and sells his CDs. You can perform on the street or in small bars.
– Illustrator, Graphic Designer
Having a talent like being a good illustrator is a big asset when traveling; plan to have a portfolio (collection of illustrations) showing what you can do: portraits, caricatures, landscapes! The faster you are, the more you will earn; 1-2 people often queue just to get your drawing. I saw one in Perth who made a lot of money in the short time I observed her.
– Diving Instructor,
One of the jobs where you live your passion; all around the world, there are diving centers waiting for you. If you have diving instructor training, you will find work easily. However, it requires training of at least 3 months. During my stay in Thailand, I noticed several job ads for Indonesia, the Maldives, and the Philippines. To find a job, just go to a center and ask if they are looking for someone.
– Street Artist, Dancer
I often met “street performers” during my travels, ranging from hip-hop dancers, jump rope jumpers, and many others. One day in Cairns, I even saw someone wearing a horse mask dancing to rodeo songs. I didn’t check if he made much money, but in any case, he was quite popular for photos.
– An Original Job:
I can even give you a little tip: buy “sausage” balloons, position yourself in a tourist spot in a big city, have a funny “amusing” look, like a clown! Set up a stand with a sign saying you are a traveler and want to discover the world; people will be curious and come see you. You’re off to make hats or dogs with balloons; practice a bit beforehand! I saw someone make over 100 euros in a few hours just doing that! Choose a place where there are children.
Afterwards, you can always do all sorts of basic jobs needed everywhere such as waiter/waitress, at funfairs, or temporary events, weddings, flyer distributor, working on farms, etc.
