Traveling with family or a friend: Good or bad idea?
Each of these two options has its pros and cons. I traveled again this summer to visit Beijing in 5 days with a friend, whereas last summer, I had traveled with my brother at the same time of year.
I will use this trip to make a comparison between these two types of travel.
Here are some examples of the advantages and disadvantages you can have when traveling with company:
Traveling with a family member or family:
- It is easier to know what you are looking for from the trip when traveling with family because you already have your routines and you know what your relative or family will like.
When we went out in the evening or for daytime visits with my brother, the choice of activities was always made naturally.
- With family, it is easier to find compromises whether for money, food, transport, or accommodation style.
During this trip, we took turns paying, and we were on the same page regarding expenses and budget.
Traveling with one or more friends:
- When you travel with friends, you have to satisfy everyone. Generally, when you travel with one or more friends who like the same activities and have the same hobbies, it is always difficult to agree on everything (Food, activities, accommodation style, etc.).
For example, my friend did not want to eat at street stalls; he always wanted to go to restaurants, which would not have happened with my brother, for example.
- You make your own choices and travel as you want because with parents with you, for example, it is more difficult to do sports activities.
Some advice for choosing the right travel companion:
- Define your needs and the goals of the trip (visits, budget, etc.) from the start; this will save you time.
- Choose an autonomous and adaptable travel companion so you can have free time for yourself, for example, and not someone who follows you all the time.
- Choose someone who matches your behavior. If you are a partygoer, traveling with a reserved person will be disadvantageous for you. It is often said that it is better to be alone than in bad company.
- Go to travel forums in the “travel companion” section and post your ad; I have a friend who found her partner on this kind of forum to go to Australia.
- Use youth hostels or go to places conducive to meeting people if you travel alone.
If you are not ready to make concessions, to adapt to the other, it is better to travel alone. You will still meet many people, don’t worry :D.
