This article provides information for people who want to settle for a short or long period in major cities! If you want to stay for a short period, the best option is to stay in a backpacker hostel or if you are careful with your money, couchsurfing is possible but preferably planned 2 weeks in advance.

Many backpackers look for housing before finding a job, and end up losing their several weeks’ deposit because they want to leave the city as soon as possible or go fruit picking Fruit picking.

Note: In Australia, salary is paid weekly while rent is mostly paid every 2 weeks, and it is required to pay at least 2 weeks’ bond to secure the accommodation.

Finding housing in Australia

It is preferable to find a job before housing unless you plan to stay long-term or you are attending a language school or are a student!

My opinion on housing in Australia: it is quite complicated, with many WHVs, shared housing is common and you will often get offers where you have to share your room with someone unless you want to pay more, expect:

– Between 100 and 150 dollars per week to share your room with 4 people,

– Between 130 to 180 per week to be 2 in a room,

– More than 180 euros per week.

These are the prices in Sydney or Melbourne, whether in the city or near the beach; otherwise, prices can drop significantly if you choose to live in the suburbs outside tourist spots.

Several solutions are possible to find fixed accommodation:

– Word of mouth, during your stay in a youth hostel or whether at work or school, there will definitely be other young people who have just arrived in the city and who plan to settle there. This solution is the simplest because you already know your future roommates and surprises about their behavior are rare. Birds of a feather flock together, as they say!

– Classified ads on the street or in backpackers, when you walk down the street, you will find many ads for housing, usually the landlord has several apartments and offers to show you one of these apartments! These are often the cheapest offers, you will probably end up sharing your apartment with Asians in the city center, sometimes French people, and with some luck English speakers

– websites, the reference site is Gumtree, there is a Gumtree section for each city, you will find everything and anything there, I advise you to search on websites if you want your own room or to find accommodation if you are 2 or 3 because even if you have a good first impression with your future roommates, you never know who you will end up with! It allows you to meet new people and create bonds!
