The 10 questions to optimize your job search in Australia.

&nbsp ; The reality is here, job hunting is difficult for people who don’t know how to do it! I talked about it in a previous post &nbsp ;

1/ How long would I like to stay in this or that city?

&nbsp ;

The length of time you want to stay in a city has a huge impact. For example, if you want to stay 1 month in Tasmania and be able to work there for 3 weeks, I’ll tell you right away that it’s not possible unless you know people who can give you a job or you have special skills. Job hunting takes time, count on 2 to 3 weeks! Most employers want people for a minimum of 3 months whether it’s a server job, barmaid, etc… That is, someone for the long term. However, you can quickly find casual work that requires no experience (funfair, festival, etc).

2/ What is my level of English and what type of job am I most likely to find work in?

&nbsp ;

Some people delude themselves because they don’t have the required English level to do the job even if they are competent, pace your approach, improve and get comfortable in English before applying for a job where English is necessary, don’t waste your time unnecessarily! You should know that even with a good level of English, you have to stand out compared to other candidates, have that little extra.

3/ Would I like to improve my English, tour Australia, or just earn money?

&nbsp ;

Many people think they can do all three, that is earn money, travel, improve English through encounters but no, that’s not the case. If you want to improve your English, stay in the same city, take language courses, make English-speaking contacts. It takes a lot of time and energy! If you want to travel, buy a van, find other travel companions and look for work when your savings reach a certain level.

4/ Am I in the right place at the right time to find work in this city?

&nbsp ;

Most casual jobs are open:

• From October to March in southern cities (New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South of Western Australia) Be careful, it is very difficult to find work in the cities after December in the southern region.
• May to September in northern cities (Northern Territory, Queensland, Western Australia).

You can find work on farms all year round if you are at the right place at the right time for the harvests!

5/ Do I have enough boldness?

Boldness can be learned and I met quite a few young people who returned to France because they were afraid to step out of their comfort zone, so they left because it was the easy way out after using all their savings. You can’t say: “I’m going to travel around Australia if you are afraid to speak English with your roommate at the youth hostel.” Find your footing, take things one step at a time and don’t go too fast!

6/ What is the budget needed to carry out my project and why work?

Find out about the activities you want to do and save the necessary budget to do them. Write down each activity you want to do and associate it with the price. If you have enough money to do the activities, why go to work? Unless your goal is to live an Australian lifestyle. &nbsp ;

7/ What are my skills?

&nbsp ; Many people underestimate or overestimate themselves! Even when I arrived, I thought I could do everything, but everyone has their own character and is not capable of doing everything! Ask yourself the right questions. &nbsp ;

8/ What are the ways to find work?

&nbsp ; The top 3 are:

• Door to door: it is the best way to find a job a short-term job whether in a restaurant, café or bar.

• Websites and recruitment agencies: websites list all kinds of ads, I recommend the Gumtree site, which is quite generalist you will find everything and anything (Housing, Work, Exchange, Sale and Purchase, Etc…)

• Word of mouth: Socialize a bit, don’t be shy, it is very easy to meet new people when traveling, it is partly your goal to meet and make new acquaintances. A little anecdote: a roommate in my room found work in the hostel where he was sleeping because he was mingling with 2 other people who already worked there as soon as a position opened up, they immediately thought of him! I myself found work thanks to acquaintances

9/ What am I willing to do to earn money?

&nbsp ;

Most people will think of everything but some jobs are very hard. For example, I did not want to work as a waiter. You should know that if you are not cut out for it, don’t force yourself! In Australia, it is very common to have a half-day “TRIAL” to test motivation and responsiveness. Most of these “Trials” are unpaid! Don’t waste your time applying and taking the trial! Think first about what you want and can do.

Many people think that earning money and then going traveling is the best thing to do! Some of these people will spend half their money partying if they live in big cities and then will only take a compensatory trip!

Plan your trip at least a little, set yourself goals, budget your project!
