When I travel, I mainly look at three criteria:
- The weather
- The budget
- The duration of my trip.
Choices related to the duration of the trip
For trips lasting a week or less, I favor Europe or a major city less than 10 hours by plane. For a week, you can easily go to North Africa, the East Coast of America, or even Asia Minor. Keep in mind that the farther you go, the more time you will need to travel and also that you will need to recover from jet lag upon arrival and return. I know people who overestimated the jet lag and slept a lot the first two days or were tired all the time.
Advice: plan at least one day of rest for jet lag or to fully enjoy yourself, otherwise favor closer destinations. When you are not used to it, even a 3-hour time difference can be tough.
Choices related to budgets
The budget is linked to comfort, the more comfortable you want your trip to be, the more money you will spend. I know people who spend 1000 euros per week while I could spend half by reducing my comfort. Generally, I choose my destination according to my budget and desires. My philosophy is to enjoy as much as possible while spending the minimum and having fun.
Advice: if you want to spend less money, you must first reduce the price of the plane ticket and accommodations. If you look for everything yourself, you can reduce these two costs by at least 10%. Buying your ticket in advance or on promotion or knowing how to buy can save you 100 to 200 euros on the plane ticket. Favoring accommodations such as youth hostels or B&Bs or free accommodations can significantly reduce your expenses.
Choices related to the weather.
This criterion is one of the most important. Even if in some countries it is always nice weather, going there in different seasons can change everything. For example, I went to Thailand in February and in August. I did not have a single day of rain in February while in August it rained at least ten days. You need to check in advance about tropical regions, seasons can be very misleading. When I was in Bali in April, it rained occasionally. A few weeks later in May, it did not rain at all.
Advice:
Go to a country when the start of the good season begins, prices are still lower and affordable and there will be a bit fewer tourists. For example, I avoid going on vacation in Europe in August or July, I prefer to wait until September, because prices are a bit cheaper and the weather is the same or a bit less hot.
Of course, I take into account all three criteria for my trips. In fact, for the month of May, I have three weeks of travel and I have therefore decided to go to Bali for two weeks then to Dubai for 4 days, because in each of these two countries, it is not yet too hot and we are in transition between two seasons. When you know how to use your money, it is easier to budget your trip.
