Who hasn’t dreamed of going on a round-the-world trip for a year or for an indefinite duration? I did it twice, the first time in October 2009 for 20 months and the second time in September 2014.

In this section, I will share with you my planning and the realization of my round-the-world trip by giving you the best possible advice, my feedback from my round-the-world journey.

Making Your Round-the-World Trip

Taking a round-the-world trip is a unique experience that you will probably do only once in your life, so you might as well enjoy it, but how to do a round-the-world trip requires long preparation. I am not talking about material preparation because I think it is much less important than mental preparation.

What is mental preparation for a round-the-world trip?

If you are traveling alone, for example, it would mean preparing yourself to speak English every day, to meet people and approach others without waiting, or to create opportunities for yourself.

Mental preparation allows you not to be afraid of the unknown, to be more comfortable daily, and to make discomfort comfortable. It helps you be more confident in yourself, to start more easily, and also to make your trip better. The preparation steps for how to do a round-the-world trip

Define your expectations and objectives; before leaving, I had established a list of must-see places for a round-the-world trip. This list allows you to define what you want to do but you will not be able to do everything. Thanks to this list, you will know which countries you want to go to.
With this list, you determine a budget to accomplish it and refine your list to match the budget you can afford.
Determine the duration or the time you have for your round-the-world trip; time is money.
Now that you know how long you will be gone and with how much money, refine the initial list of expectations and objectives.
The objectives during your round-the-world trip may change, which is why making a more complete list at the start allows you not to forget what you want to do.

Personally, I am a web entrepreneur and I don’t really have a budget to allocate since I work and earn money while I travel. By the way, I went on a round-the-world trip without a round-the-world ticket and I travel according to my objectives. Here is a list of countries visited during my 2014 round-the-world trip.

Take a world tour differently

Do not limit yourself to 1 year of world travel, leave or return whenever you want. This feeling of freedom is doing what you want and spending as much time as you want to travel the world should not be limited. You can even come back after 6 months if you get tired of it.
At the beginning of world tours, we are very excited, we want to do everything possible and as many things as possible. Personally, my advice is to ENJOY. When I hear someone tell me they traveled around the world in 20 countries in 6 months, I think they spent more time in transport than actually traveling the world. Staying a long time (not too long either) in one place allows you to better immerse yourself in the people, the place, and the local culture. Enjoying means taking your time.
Learning the local language and talking to locals, especially Spanish in South America, will open more doors than you think. People are also more open if you speak their language because it shows you are interested in them.
See the city by night as well as by day. Some places are very different at night and during the day, especially in Asia. You can watch shows, eat at a night market, and experience the nightlife.
